As the weather begins to change from summer to fall so does our skin. Many people suffer from dry skin all year round but for others the change in temperature will bring on dry skin. Those individuals with Rosacea know how temperature changes can disturb the skin and cause a flare up. The temperature indoors cause lots of problems for many such as dry, itchy, and flaky skin. Even in the summer months those individuals suffering from Eczema-can find that the air conditioner can serve as a trigger. Central heating can affect many skin disorders and bring about dry skin. So let’s talk about possible ways to ease the discomfort of dry skin and begin to repair it.
1. Great skincare begins from within so make sure that you are consuming a clean diet. Drink your water! Include oils such as avocado or olive oil into your diet. Your skin will love it! Include essential fatty acids especially during the winter months. Essential fatty acids can be found in fish and flax seed which can keep you hydrated. Those individuals who consume wild Alaskan Salmon in particular have skin that absolutely radiates a glow. Eat an avocado a day! Keep in mind that salmon has blood thinning capabilities and you will need to run this by your physician if you are taking any blood thinning medication for high blood pressure or any platelet condition. Safety first!. What’s the purpose of essential fatty acids? You will begin hydrating and moisturizing your skin from within. By the way, don’t forget to add your “greens” into your diet. Salads are loaded with vitamins and phytochemicals and these will keep your beautiful skin hydrated. . Let’s help the skin retain the moisture it so needs through the foods we eat first. Don’t forget to eat a handful of nuts (almonds) great for hydrating and giving your skin that sparkle!..
1. Food_ Feed your skin from within. We covered that above.
2. Cleanser -Choose a cleanser designed for your skin type. In this case, dry skin-make sure that it is NOT a foaming cleanser. I have often heard people tell me that they do not cleanse their skin because they feel it will dry it even further. There are lots of products out on the market that are gentle and can be used by those with dry skin. If you are absolutely at a loss here are some suggestions: For very dry skin you may want to consider using: Shikai, Borage dry skin Therapy facial cleanser. It is mild and soap free. It is economical and a little bit goes a long way. Truly cost effective and helps dry skin remain in a hydrated state. If you are a skin type that is sensitive to many ingredients you may find this product serves your skin well in regards to avoiding allergic reactions. consider adding a drop of PURE glycerin into cleanser should it not already contain it.
3. Moisturizers- are designed to keep your outer skin hydrated and to protect that barrier. In dry skin you goal is to restore moisture so choose a moisturizer designed for dry skin. You want to apply an emollient to keep your skin soft and hydrated. ShiKai Borage Therapy Facial moisturizer ($13-14) Again, excellent product for those with sensitive and dry skin. Another aspect of this skincare line that love and respect is that there is absolutely no testing on animals.
4. A few more tips-
A. Drink water
b. Place a a small humidifier in your room during the winter months because your skin will love it. This truly helps just be sure to clean out unit after every single use.It is quite easy for bacteria to accumulate in these types of units.
3 Stop smoking- If for nothing else- at least- do it for your skin if your appearance is of any importance to you. You deepen lines and wrinkles especially around your mouth and forehead. A smoker’s skin tends to sag much quicker than a non-smoker. Please pardon me, if I sound like another broken record regarding the subject of smoking but it would be irresponsible of me as a skincare therapist to not gently remind you of its perils. I know this is very difficult so consider the different options that can help you in kicking this habit that will ultimately affect your overall health. .
4. Easy does it with alcohol consumption. Drinking alcohol even a glass or two will dehydrate you. Alcohol affects the vitamin A in your body that is also responsible for cell turnover, (which as we know is vital for aging gracefully. Did you know that even one drink a day will enlarge your blood vessels creating a flushing on your face? it deepens any lines already on your face.
4. Keep using your sunscreen. Yes! even in the winter time.
5. When outside protect your skin by wearing gloves and using a scarf to protect your face from the cold air.
6. Don’t forget to moisturize your lips because it is easy to become cracked and uncomfortable most especially in the winter.
7. I also love using my kitchen cupboard skin care recipes from cieloscent- Do It Yourself Skincare is great! I use Manuka honey (you may want to check out my podcast on Manuka honey) and I apply it-leave it on for 15 minutes and there you have it super soft and hydrated skin. A little oatmeal mask is super yummy as well. Incorporate “skin oil therapy” power into your skincare regiment during the winter months. What’s that? Add vitamin E, avocado, jojoba, and the many other beneficial oils available to us.
8. Exfoliating is important but hold off until your skin heals if your skin is excessively dry.
9. Use warm water when you shower or when cleansing your skin.
10. Cocoa butter-Extremely beneficial for moisturizing lips and under nose dryness when you have a cold.
On a personal note: My son experienced eczema as a child and fortunately I came across this product at my local whole foods and to this day (he is 21 now) still uses most of the products. This is an excellent line and as a mom and skincare therapist I give it my thumbs up. I do not represent this company but I share with you my experiences.
