Vitamin C the antidote? Possibly! It can be in combination of other things such as feeding the body wholesome nutritious foods. Is it enough? It all depends on a variety of factors: stress levels, environmental elements, medical challenges and even a lack of one or two vitamins in your body can effect your skin health. On today’s podcast we focus on the possibility of adding: Supplements for enhanced skin health. One of the concerns that I have with supplementation is that many people use vitamins as “one size fits all”. Suggestion: Get a complete blood work up and tell your MD your checking for any vitamin deficiency such as vitamin D. Obtain the vitamins needed as directed. Attempt to get all of your vitamins from food and rely on one or two supplements to “power charge” your immune system such as vitamin C. Caution: Lots of vitamin C (over 2000mg) may give you kidney problems! Stones to be exact so careful if you are prone. Less is more. You shouldn’t take excessive amounts of vitamins! You can actually offset a vitamin level that is just fine within your body. Less is more and quality of Vitamin C counts! We know from listening to this podcast that we can apply certain vitamins topically such as vitamin C. We can add it to our skin care products or make our own serum. Ingesting vitamin C in moderation has an overall health benefit and will reflect that vibrant health appearance on your skin.
1. Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid: One of my favorite because it is a powerhouse combating inflammation! Can also aid in acne challenged skin. Vitamin C can be found both in the dermis and epidermis and is transported in the bloodstream. Vitamin C helps in prolonging the birth of a wrinkle as described by Dr. Nicholas Perricone author of the wrinkle cure. Why Vitamin C? It’s a powerhouse molecule! It helps stimulating collagen production. Psst….In Greek collagen means glue-Now we can say that it keeps all the components in our skin together! The “glue” that helps us maintain a more youthful appearance. Love it! Here I go again, a little skin bio 101: Collagen is a protein with super unique amino acids. What are amino acids? The building blocks of protein and found in your skin’s collagen. This means that you need to feed your skin everyday -inside and out-in order to keep the collagen working for you. We now know that collagen is a protein and is responsible in keeping your skin healthy and strong. So far so good! What are free radicals?. Free radicals are bad! They steal “electrons” from your “good” cells and begin inflammation. This invasion creates injury (oxidation) because your good health depends on high electron cellular activity. Sun damage and smoking can really beat up the collagen resulting in skin damage and making you look older. Vitamin C can help heal and repair this type of skin damage. Adding Vitamin E is key when battling sun damage! Overall, Vitamin C is best taken daily as a supplement (consult your Medical doctor) and when applied topically. Feeding your skin vitamin C inside and out is amazing! vitamin C may also help with dry skin by studies remain cloudy on this notion. Always check for sensitivities:****Of course, check with your medical practitioner when under care and skin patch test ALWAYS.****
A. Foods high in Vitamin C content: Citric Fruits, Oranges, Grape fruits, bell peppers, cabbage, cantaloupe etc. do your homework and research foods rich in Vitamin C.
B. Supplements inside and out.
C. Topical application of vitamin C is far greater in protecting you from skin damage than just ingesting as a supplement. In the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis) you will find dead skin cells or corneocytes. Important note: The Stratum Corneum will prevent the vitamin C from doing its job so exfoliation is important. You need to remove the stratum corneum and its done through exfoliation. This is what allows for the absorption of the topical vitamin C. Your skin needs to be acidic to allow the ascorbic acid to be effective. I advise you to use 100 % pure L- ASCORBIC ACID for topical use. I always add vitamin E because together they are amazing in healing your skin. Because of its skin lightening component it can help with hyperpigmentaion.
D. Sun Protection. Vitamin C is NOT a sunscreen. It’s the free radicals that you’re being protected from not the actual UVA AND UVB rays. It just doesn’t absorb the rays like your Broad spectrum sunscreen will. Is it helpful in preventing damage yes but -again-not enough to consider it a safe block from the UVA VB rays.
